According to South Korean and Japanese military, North Korea has fired a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) towards the sea off its east coast, in what would be the first such test of the reclusive state’s most powerful weaponry in over five years. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff claim to have detected a launch of a “unidentified missile” by North Korea. It’s thought to be a long-range missile, maybe an ICBM, fired on a “lofted” trajectory. South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol is expected to take a harder approach against Pyongyang after he takes office in May. Al Jazeera spoke with Kim Jong-ha, a security expert from Daejeon’s Hannam University.
