A major stranding on New Zealand’s Farewell Spit has claimed the lives of at least 31 pilot whales. The whale corpses were discovered on Thursday, strewn across three kilometres of shore. While the fatalities are terrible, rescuers believe they are a natural occurrence. In the last 15 years, at least 11 pilot whales have stranded in the region. This is the latest in a series of large strandings at Farewell Spit, on New Zealand’s South Island’s northernmost tip.
