China claims that Russia is a “important” G20 member who cannot be expelled by others. Following Washington’s threat to exclude Moscow from the G20 for its invasion of Ukraine, Beijing recognised Russia as a “essential member” of the group on Wednesday.
“The G20 is the major venue for international economic cooperation,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry. “Russia is a key member, and no one member has the authority to evict another.”
