Veronika Didusenko awoke at 5 a.m. on February 24 to the faint sounds of sirens she had never heard before. They grew more audible as they got nearby.

Russian military were bombing Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city, as they invaded her country.

“I switched on the TV and checked my Facebook page to see what was going on”, the 26-year-old told Fox News Digital. “I noticed my pals writing stuff like, ‘The fight has begun’. Russian forces have invaded Ukraine and are bombarding Kyiv. I was astounded. I just took my clothing because I already had my bags packed. I roused my kid [Alex] and drove him to my car. I’ve just begun driving to the west of Ukraine. I needed to get out of there as soon as possible”.
