Vice president Kamala Harris offered condolences to Tyre Nichols’ family after attending his funeral on Wednesday in Memphis, Tennessee. Nichols, 29, was killed three days after officers struck him.
Civil rights leaders and family members at the funeral called for an end to continued police violence against black Americans. Speaking of Tyre, family members said he was a young man who loved photography and skateboarding.
Tyre’s family, addressing a congregation that included relatives of Bronna Taylor and George Floyd, demanded justice for Tyre and two African-Americans who sparked protests in 2020. “We cannot continue to let these people brutalize our kids,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather.
“This is a family that lost their son and their brother through an act of violence at the hands and the feet of people who had been charged with keeping them safe,” Harris said. “Tyre Nichols should have been safe.” Harris has pledged to help pass federal legislation to reduce police misconduct.
