#North Korea, according to the #United States, violated #UN Security Council resolutions by launching an intercontinental #ballistic missile, and it called on all countries to impose sanctions against it.

An intercontinental ballistic missile test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was harshly condemned by the United States, according to National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson, who also confirmed South Korea’s report of the launch on Thursday at local time. She said that President Joe Biden and his national security team were “assessing the situation in close coordination with our allies and partners.”

The launch, which comes after a barrage of missiles the day before, was described by State Department spokesman Ned Price as a obvious violation of resolutions of the UN Security Council that forbid ICBM launches. According to Mr. Price, the launches demonstrate North Korea’s threat to its neighbours, the region, global peace and security, and the non-proliferation system.

This action “underlines the necessity for all countries to properly implement UN Security Council resolutions linked to the DPRK, which are intended to prevent the DPRK from getting the capabilities and materials needed to carry out these destabilising tests,” he said.

China is North Korea’s main friend and economic partner, however he did not specifically name any nations. A US-led attempt to put additional sanctions on North Korea over a previous round of missile launches was blocked in May by China and Russia, whose relations with the West have dramatically deteriorated as a result of the West’s invasion of Ukraine.
