The Sri Lankan navy detained 21 Tamil fishermen and two fishing boats for allegedly breaching the maritime border. The fishermen were from Nagapattinam and had gone on January 31 with a group of 400 boats, carrying over a thousand fisherman.

According to initial reports, the Tamil fishermen were surrounded by Sri Lankan fishermen from Vadamaratchi, Neduntheevu, Yazhpaanam, and Paruthithurai in retaliation for an incident on January 27 in which a Tamil fishermen’s boat allegedly struck a fibre boat carrying two Sri Lankan fishermen, sinking it.

One of the fishermen’s bodies washed up on the shores of Paruthithurai beach. Outraged fishermen took to the streets and encircled the Tamil fishermen’s boats. The Sri Lankan navy, which caught the boats and detained 21 Tamil fishermen, is yet to produce them today at Yazhpanam Court. Sri Lankan fishermen have also claimed that when they were surrounded, Tamil fishermen assaulted them with stones and petrol bombs.
