According to a recent declaration from the Indian government, a large evacuation campaign would be organized to bring trapped Indians back from Ukraine aboard planes. The Indian government will bear the expense of the flights. It is unclear if the government would dispatch private planes or the Indian Air Force to remove the residents.
As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalates, Ukraine blocked its airspace, stranding hundreds of Indian people on former Soviet territory. While the Indian government launched an evacuation operation, dispatching Air India planes to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and promising further flights from Ukraine in the next days, Russia’s air attacks forced the Ukrainian government to block its airspace.
India is now considering an evacuation of Indian citizens via alternate routes. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday that teams are being dispatched to Ukraine’s land borders in Hungary, Poland, the Slovak Republic, and Romania to help with the evacuation of Indian people.
