Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, welcomed Benjamin Netanyahu’s return to his position as prime minister of Israel on Thursday and expressed a desire to further bilateral ties, according to the Kremlin. After being in opposition, Israel’s conservative veteran Netanyahu was sworn in as prime minister on Thursday, leading the “most right-wing government” in its history, according to analysts.

“I hope that the new government under your leadership will continue the line of strengthening Russian-Israeli cooperation in all areas for the benefit of our peoples, in the interest of ensuring peace and security in the Middle East,” Putin said in a message to Netanyahu, quoted in the statement. “In Russia, we greatly appreciate your personal and longstanding contribution to strengthening friendly relations between our countries,” Putin said.

Israel adopted a cautious stance toward Moscow when the Russian incursion in Ukraine got underway in February, attempting to uphold its neutrality. Israel has highlighted the unique ties between the two countries because it is home to more than a million people born in the former Soviet Union. To “clear up the conditions in the Middle East and the international scene in general,” the foreign ministry of Russia stated that it was “ready for constructive cooperation” with Israel.

He spoke of Ukraine’s “readiness for close cooperation to strengthen our ties & confront common challenges, achieve prosperity & victory over evil.”
