Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who is currently the longest-reigning monarch in Europe, has made the decision to deprive four of her grandchildren of their royal titles. The decision was made, according to the palace’s Wednesday announcement, in order to give her younger son Prince Joachim’s children a more normal upbringing.

According to a statement from the royal palace, “as of January 1, 2023, the descendants of His Royal Highness Prince Joachim will only be able to use their titles of Count and Countess of Monpezat, with their prior titles of Prince and Princess of Denmark ceasing to exist.”

The four children of 53-year-old Prince Joachim are Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, and Athena. Even though they won’t have their official royal titles, they will still have access to many benefits associated with their ancestry.

By making this choice, Her Majesty the Queen hopes to give the four grandchildren a much greater sense of freedom from the obligations and special considerations that a formal affiliation with the Royal House as an institution entails.

The statement continued, “The queen’s decision is in line with similar changes that other royal houses have implemented in recent years in various ways.” The decision, though, surprised Prince Joachim’s first wife, the mother of his two oldest sons. This appeared out of nowhere. The kids feel left out, the countess told. They are unable to comprehend why their identity is being stolen.
