The voluntary retirement of Tamil Nadu’s Additional Chief Secretary, Jagmohan Singh Raju, was accepted on Thursday. He was nominated as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in Punjab just hours afterwards.

After the Stalin government accepted his resignation late Thursday evening, the BJP nominated him as a candidate from Amritsar East. He will go off against Congress Punjab Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

In his resignation letter to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday, Raju stated that the “sad conditions in his home state of Punjab” were “heavy on his conscience” and that he felt compelled to act since he was a “son of the soil.”
