On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted release to AG Perarivalan, one of seven prisoners serving life sentences in the case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991.
Given that Perarivalan had been imprisoned for over 32 years, a bench comprised of Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Gavai granted him bail.
“Taking into consideration the applicant’s over 30 years in jail, we are of the considered opinion that he is entitled to be freed on bail, despite the Centre’s fervent resistance”, the bench wrote in an interim decision.
