Pentagon has rejected Poland’s offer to provide Ukraine with jets

The Pentagon has rejected Poland’s stunning statement that it would hand over its MiG-29 fighter planes to the US for use by Ukraine, a rare display of discord as NATO countries strive to strengthen Ukrainian fighters while avoiding being embroiled in a larger conflict with Russia.

According to Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby, Poland’s revelation that it intends to deploy the 28 aeroplanes to the US Ramstein Air Facility in Germany raises the troubling potential of warplanes departing from a US and NATO base to fly into contested airspace with Russia in the Ukraine crisis.

“We will continue to talk with Poland and our other NATO partners about this issue and the tremendous logistical issues it creates”, Kirby said in a statement.
