On Saturday, former Prime Minister #Indira Gandhi received tributes on the occasion of her birthday from Prime Minister #Narendra Modi, #Sonia Gandhi, and Congress President #Mallikarjun Kharge. Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress, and Party Chairman Kharge visited the Iron Lady’s final burial place, Shakti Sthal, to pay floral tributes. Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, and Bhupinder Hooda, a prominent member of the Congress, were also spotted paying their respects at the Raj Ghat. On the occasion of the former Prime Minister’s birthday anniversary, Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the Bharat Jodo Yarta, also presented flowers to her during the march.

“Tributes to our previous PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary,” tweeted PM Modi, who will begin his three-day campaign in Gujarat on Saturday.

Only female MLAs, MPs, party workers, panchayat members, and Bharat Jodo Yatris will walk in the Bharat Jodo Yatra with Rahul Gandhi to demonstrate “Mahila shakti,” according to a statement by Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh earlier to the news.

On this day in 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Indira Gandhi was born. She was India’s first and only female prime minister. She was Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister after independence, daughter. Her mother, Kamala Nehru, was a member of the Indian National Congress and a freedom fighter as well.

In 1966, Indira Gandhi was chosen to serve as India’s third prime minister. Under her guidance, India waged war against Pakistan in support of East Pakistan’s independence movement, leading to the establishment of Bangladesh. From 1975 to 1977, there was also an emergency under Gandhi’s administration.
