To boost the revival of the nation’s tourism industry, Thai authorities said on Thursday that visitors from China could enter the country without having to undergo pre-departure coronavirus tests.

China has seen an increase in illnesses, and its hospitals and crematoriums are overflowing since Beijing last month relaxed severe limits. Several nations, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and France, have implemented new regulations requiring travelers from China to present negative Covid tests as concerns about the rise in cases grow.

However, Thai authorities argued on Thursday that every nation should be treated equally. Following a meeting of health, tourism, and transportation officials on Thursday, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul informed reporters that Thailand does not require Covid test results from visitors from any country. Before the pandemic, China accounted for most international visitors to Thailand, with close to 11 million arrivals in 2019.

“This is an opportunity to restore our economic situation and recover from losses we suffered for nearly three years,” Anutin said. Tanes Petsuwan, deputy governor of the Thailand Tourism Authority, predicted that this month, roughly 60,000 Chinese people would be entering Thailand, and that figure will continue to climb.

“We expect Chinese tourists to come to Thailand after Chinese New Year,” Tourism Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said. Thailand saw its ten million foreign tourists in December 2022, a significant rise from the 430,000 recorded in 2021 but still well short of the 40 million visits recorded in 2019. Officials in Thailand anticipate 20 million visitors in 2023, but they think Chinese tourists could boost the number to 25 million.
