More Russians Are Fleeing To Kazakhstan As A Result Of The Conscription Drive

1 min read

Following Moscow’s launch of a recruiting drive this week during Ukraine’s turmoil, Kazakh officials stated on Friday that there had been an increase in visitors to Russia’s neighbor. On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s first mobilization since World War II and approved a proposal to annex major sections of Ukraine, prompting a rush of conscription-eligible males to flee the country.

According to a statement from Kazakhstan’s border guard agency, which did not disclose any arrivals data, the world’s second-longest border, which comprises 30 road checkpoints, was notably busy at four of them. Reuters spoke with a witness who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for his safety. The witness stated that they had been waiting in line at the border checkpoint since Thursday morning and had observed unusually significant traffic from Russia as well as lengthy, comprehensive examinations of Russian vehicles by Russian border guards.
