A 10-year-old boy who fell into a 35-meter-deep hole at a construction site two days ago was rescued by hundreds of people in Vietnam on Monday. Thai Ly Hao Nam, the kid, probably went seeking scrap metal when he fell into the 25 cm-wide hollow concrete pillar shaft of a new bridge in southern Dong Thap province, a rescuer told AFP by phone.
“We are trying our best. We cannot tell the boy’s condition yet,” the rescuer said. Media reports state that rescuers have attempted drilling and loosening the surrounding earth to lift the pillar and save Nam.
Authorities “are uncertain about the boy’s current health. Despite constant infusions of oxygen into the body, he has stopped communicating with the outside world” hole, according to the Tuoi Tre newspaper in Vietnam.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested on Monday that federal rescuers assist local authorities in saving the boy.
