Avatar: The Way of Water, a cinematic spectacle by filmmaker Cameron, will soon be shown in Indian theatres. With over 15,000 premium format seats selling out in just three days, the movie’s advance bookings are off to a tremendous start. It is anticipated that booking for the standard 2D and 3D presentations will begin on Friday.
The Avatar sequel will be released on December 16 in India in six different languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The early booking pattern has greatly boosted the movie’s business in India.
Avatar became the highest-grossing movie ever thirteen years ago, a record it continues to hold today with $2.92 billion in ticket sales, including re-releases. According to Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: The Way of Water should debut in North America for at least $150 million to $170 million. Cameron is renowned for stating that the movie will need to generate between the third and fourth most money to cover its expenses. The sequel was described by the director as “very f***ing” expensive and “the worst business case in movie history” in an interview with GQ.
“You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even,” he said.
