Israeli squatters build new settlement atop UNESCO World Heritage site in Israel-Palestine

Israeli settlers have established a new outpost in the town of Battir in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem, causing worry among Palestinians who fear additional land seizure.

A gang of Israeli settlers, escorted by armed Israeli troops, descended on a mountainside on the borders of Battir, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its lush green hilltops and historic terraces, shortly after midnight on Monday.

“They brought two mobile caravans, a huge tent, a water tank, and several sheep and established up on the top of the hill”, said local activist Hassan Muamer.
