The plot of the film is based on Kalki Krishnamoorthy’s five-chapter novel “Ponniyin Selvan,” written in 1955. Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan wrote the two parts for Ponniyin Selvan. Mani Ratnam directed this cherished project.
Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah produced the film through their respective companies, Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The ensemble cast of the film series includes Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, the film was shot by Ravi Varman, edited by A. Sreekar Prasad, and the production design was handled by Thota Tharani.
