An Iranian court has sentenced a couple in their 20s to more than 10 years in prison for posting a video of them dancing in the street. The court convicted them of ‘promoting corruption’ and ‘public prostitution’ under archaic Islamic laws. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), they received 10 years and six months in prison. In addition, the couple was not allowed to use the Internet and leave Iran for two years.

Amir Mohammad Ahmadi and Astiyazh Haghighi were arrested in November last year after a video of them dancing in front of Tehran’s Azadi (Freedom) tower went viral.

The video shows Haghighi, without a scarf or hijab dancing alone at night in front of a landmark in what authorities saw as an attempt to protest against the country’s strict Islamic laws. In Iran, a woman cannot dance with a man without a hijab in public. Before his arrest, authorities also raided Haghighi’s home.
