According to a report , Iran has detained a former member of its #national #football team, accusing him of opposing the regime and attempting to harm the country’s #World Cup squad. The outlet also claimed that #Voria Ghafouri was spreading misinformation about the administration, citing the Iranian and Tasnim news agencies. Ghafouri has been urging the government on social media to stop killing Kurdish people. He was formerly the captain of the Esteghlal football team in Tehran.
The purpose of Ghafouri’s arrest is to serve as a warning to the team, which is already under fire for not singing the national anthem prior to its match against England.
Ghafouri has been charged of being a Kurdish separatist by Iranian ministers. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, had previously observed, in reference to Ghafouri, that certain people who benefit from the nation’s peace and stability, enjoying their occupations and favourite sports, bite the hand that feeds them. However, the football player has denied all of the accusations.
Ghafouri was a member of Iran’s World Cup team in 2018, but he was not selected for the Qatar World Cup team this year. Iran has been rocked by protests in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was detained in September for allegedly violating the country’s stringent dress codes for women based on Islamic sharia law. Mahsa was accused of breaking these codes.
Volker Turk, the UN’s human rights chief, reported on Thursday that approximately 14,000 people, including children, had been detained in connection with the demonstrations and bemoaned the fact that at least six protesters had received death sentences.
