India’s Operation Ganga evacuation operation in war-torn Ukraine is taking back not just Indian students but also their canine companions. General Vijay Kumar Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways, and Civil Aviation, posted a video to his Twitter account in which some Indian students are seen bringing their pet dogs back to India.

‘Some of the evacuees even brought their four-legged companions.’ In a tweet, General Vijay Kumar Singh said, “It’s great to have all of our #IndianStudents aboard on the @IAF MCC C-17 Globemaster, preparing to return to the safety of our country.”

A video of an Indian third-year engineering student at Kharkiv National University refusing to leave the country leaked on the internet a few days ago. He pleaded with the Indian authorities to assist him in bringing his dog back to India, since the Indian embassy in Kyiv was refusing to assist him. Union minister Raosaheb Danve said Thursday that some 4,000 to 5,000 Indians have been returned to the nation so far, and the effort would continue to bring back all those who remain.
