Hurricane Lan Is Strengthening As Cuba And Florida Prepare For Its Approach

1 min read

Hurricane Ian is intensifying as it approaches western Cuba, where officials have evacuated tens of thousands of residents in anticipation of torrential rain and “devastating” wind. Ian was expected to close the western tip of Cuba as a major hurricane on Monday evening, then strengthen to a Category 4 with maximum winds of 225km/h (140 miles per hour) over warm Gulf of Mexico seas before making landfall in the US state of Florida later that week.

Authorities have urged inhabitants to prepare for the fast-moving storm, which the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned will cause “devastating wind damage” to western Cuba.

According to Cuban official media, authorities are evacuating 50,000 people in Pinar del Rio province, a less densely populated area of the island devoted mostly to farming and fishing – and where the storm is expected to make a direct impact.
