According to officials, a mass shooting at a preschool centre in a province in northern Thailand resulted in 34 fatalities, including #22 children. Before shooting himself to death, the perpetrator, a former #police officer, also murdered his wife and child. About 30 children were at the centre when the gunman entered the building at 12.30pm, during the children’s sleeping time, The victims were aged Around two years old. Jidapa Boonsom, a district official, told that the attacker first shot four or five members of staff, including a teacher who was eight months pregnant. “At first people thought it was fireworks,” she added.

The videos spreaded on social media showed sheets covering  the bodies of children lying in pools of blood at the centre in the town of Uthai Sawan in the north-eastern province. Local police said the attacker was with a shotgun, a pistol and a knife, and that he fled the scene in a vehicle. After the Incident attacker returned to his home and killed himself along with his wife and child. According to Chakkraphat Wichit vaidya, superintendent of the Na Klang police station, the shooter was let off from the force last year.

In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha expressed his sincere sympathies to the victims’ families and the injured. In urgent need of assistance, he stated, “I ordered the police chief to immediately attend to the area and all the connected authorities support all those impacted.” Compared to several other nations in the region, Thailand has a high percentage of gun ownership, but official statistics do not account for a significant number of illegal firearms, many of which have been imported over the years from war-torn neighbours across porous borders. Thailand rarely experiences mass killings, but in 2020 an irate soldier over a property deal killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations.
