Former England captain Michael Vaughan says he would advise Joe Root to resign as captain

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes if Joe Root asked for his opinion, he would urge him to step down.

Root, England’s Test captain since 2017, is under pressure since the team is winless in nine games and has only won one of their last 17.

They’ve lost their previous four series, including a 4-0 Ashes loss and a 1-0 loss in the West Indies, which finished with a 10-wicket loss on Sunday.

“He’s gone it as far as he can”, Vaughan said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Vaughan, who has known Root since he was a student at Sheffield Collegiate, added: If he calls me in the next week and asks for advice, I’ll be brutally honest: I’d advise him to step down.

“Will England suffer as a result of his absence as captain? I don’t believe they’d do that since they’d get his runs and a senior player.

“They’ll receive a fantastic role model – I don’t think there’s a greater role model in English cricket”.
