India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered her fifth budget speech in 87 minutes on Wednesday. Sitharaman’s previous budget speech in 2022 was close to 92 minutes, the shortest. A year ago, in 2021, he spoke for 110 minutes (or one hour and 50 minutes).

The Finance Minister has also created the longest budget speech in the history of India. In 2020, his speech was 2 hours 40 minutes; Because of her position, she was forced to hold it down and breathe. With this budget, he became the sixth finance minister of independent India to present five consecutive financial statements. Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, Yashwant Sinha, Manmohan Singh, and Morarji Desai are other ministers who have achieved this feat. However, former Prime Minister Morarji Desai has a record of presenting 10 budgets.

Sitharaman was the second woman to present the budget in independent India. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was the Iron Lady of India when she presented the financial statements for 1970-71. This will be Sitharaman’s last full budget speech ahead of next year’s general elections.
