Hoelun received a call from her mother to pack her belongings only hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the partial mobilization on Wednesday in response to Moscow’s combat failures in Ukraine. Her 29-year-old partner was conscripted as a former serviceman and dispatched to the front lines in eastern Ukraine following a brief refresher training.

“She [mother] and my father picked us up, and by midnight we were at the border town of Kyakhta,” she said. “There were still a few automobiles, a few more than normal.” We waited two hours before they let us inside the border zone, then another three hours in line. We were requested to remove all of our items from the car, and they searched all of our bags.
