England orchestrated their own demise in a humiliating seven-run loss to West Indies at the Women’s World Cup in Dunedin.
The reigning champs blew six fielding opportunities, let up 23 runs in wides, and then made a mess of chasing 226 for their second loss in as many games.
A 61-run ninth-wicket partnership between Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone gave them hope, but Cross was run out backing-up for 27.
That left nine runs to win, and one run later, number 11 Anya Shrubsole was bowled by Anisa Mohammed to seal West Indies their first World Cup victory over England.
West Indies had fallen from 81-0 to 98-4 when a 123-run stand between Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation boosted them to 225-6.
Despite dropping three catches of their own, the West Indies eventually pressured England for a memorable triumph.
With the top four teams from the eight-team group through to the semi-finals, England’s defence of the title they won in 2017 is far from finished, but there is now little room for error.
On Monday, they will play South Africa in Tauranga.
P.S. West Indies add this victory to their victory against hosts New Zealand, putting them in a solid position to reach the semi-finals.
