The operator of Dubai’s major airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, said on Tuesday that one of its two runways will be overhauled for 45 days beginning in May. Flights will most certainly be reduced ahead of the typical start of the summer season as a result of the shutdown.

The northern runway will be closed from May 9 to June 22 as part of a project to modernise the airfield to guarantee “safety and efficient operations”, according to the airport.

Some airlines may reroute flights to Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central, the Gulf city’s second airport, to prevent delays and disturbance. According to the operator, all airlines should “prepare for flight cutbacks and schedule plans appropriately”.

The runway was last extensively repaired in 2014, and the southern runway was similarly rebuilt in 2019.
