The #Premier League club announced on Tuesday that Portuguese star #Cristiano Ronaldo will leave #Manchester United amicably and immediately. The announcement followed the footballer’s candid discussion of his differences with the team and manager Erik Ten Hag in an interview with British TV personality Piers Morgan. The club was reportedly considering legal action against the interview due to a possible contract breach.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect,” the club said. “The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford.”
Ronaldo used social media to thank the supporters and let them know that he was leaving the club while he was in Qatar with the Portugal team for the FIFA World Cup 2022.
“Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early,” Ronaldo said on his official accounts. “I love Manchester United, and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.”
Ronaldo claimed in his interview with Morgan that the club’s manager and a number of high-ranking officials wanted to get rid of him. He also criticized the club’s training facility’s infrastructure and attributed the club’s current state to the family that owns it, the Glazers.
Ronaldo had previously stated that he would not provide an apology for the interview.
“I don’t have to worry what others think,” he said at a press conference. “I talk when I want to.”
