“CODA,” a film about a deaf family with a hearing daughter, has received the Academy Award for Best Picture. The prize was handed by Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli to the film, which follows Ruby, who can hear, as she juggles her musical dreams with her family’s need on her for communication.
Apple TV+ knocked out Netflix Inc.’s “The Power of the Dog” and other typical Hollywood studio submissions. Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, and Patrick Wachsberger celebrate after “CODA” wins Best Picture at the 94th Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Troy Kotsur became the first deaf person to win an Oscar for his part in “CODA,” winning best supporting actor. Several lead parts are played by deaf performers.
