Chandigarh Falls Into Darkness Due to Electricity Department Strike

For the last 36 hours, Chandigarh has been without power. Power outages also impacted industrial output and manufacturing in various municipal units. On Monday night, demonstrators from the energy department went on strike under the flag of the UT Powermen Union. They are opposing the decision of the UT Chandigarh administration to privatise the energy sector. The Punjab and Haryana High Court will hear a case on the “energy crisis” in Chandigarh. “Telecom towers in Chandigarh are completely reliant on electric grid supplies,” claimed the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association, DIPA, in a statement. The Union Territory administration’s official notification came hours after some sections of Chandigarh reported massive power disruptions.
