State-owned BSNL will launch 5G services by April 2024, according to Thursday’s statement from Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

To put out the 4G network, which will be upgraded to 5G in about a year from the time the order is placed under the contract, BSNL has picked a consortium led by TCS and C-DOT. The BSNL 5G network will launch in March or April 2024. It is moving along quickly. According to Vaishnaw, the rapid rollout of 4G and 5G will begin in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

He spoke outside a ceremony where Jio and Airtel were launching their 5G services in Odisha. Vaishnaw and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the services. “Entire Odisha will be covered by 5G services in 2 years. Today, 5G services have been launched in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” the telecom minister said.

“It has just been three months of 5G launch and we are seeing the fastest rollout of 5G networks in India,” the minister said. By August 15, 2024, all 7,500 communities in the state will have 5,500 mobile towers installed by the Center, according to the minister. “It is our internal target to complete the installation of 5,500 towers by August 15, 2024. These will be for 4G services but later on upgraded to 5G as well,” Vaishnaw said.

Vaishnaw inaugurated 100 towers out of the 5,500 total, bringing 4G services to more than 100 communities. The minister announced that Software Technology Parks of India would establish eight centers to support entrepreneurs in the region.

By December 2023, he claimed, the centers would be established in Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Jaipur, Angul, and Koraput. During the opening event, a memorandum of understanding for setting up a 5G lab was signed between Siksha O Anusandhan University and Reliance Jio. The lab will give Odisha students practical exposure to the most recent 5G technology and increase their employment prospects.
