Barcelona manager Xavi will not rule out a late charge for the La Liga title following his team’s thumping of runaway leaders Real Madrid in a statement win at the Bernabeu
Real, who had won the previous five Clasicos, leads Sevilla by nine points with nine games remaining, with third-placed Barcelona behind by three points with a game in hand.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice and set up Ferran Torres on his Clasico debut.
Before the interval, Aubameyang and Ronald Araujo headed in crosses from Ousmane Dembele, and Aubayemang then flicked the ball into the path of Torres for their third.
Aubayemang, an ex-Arsenal striker, added a fourth after a feed from Torres.
Barcelona is currently undefeated in 12 games, and Xavi stated: “I’m not sure whether we can win the championship; nothing can be ruled out. Maybe we’re a little late, but this is a huge victory for us”. We outperformed Real Madrid. In the stadium, we were almost like a home team. It’s a day to celebrate, not just as a Barcelona manager but also as a supporter “We might easily have scored five or six points. We corrected our bad dynamic of losing the past few Clasicos”.
Sergio Busquets, a Barcelona midfielder, added: “If we still have a chance to win the championship, we will fight until the very end. It’s challenging, but anything can happen in football. We are Barca”.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted responsibility for the devastating defeat, saying “it’s my fault”, but urged his squad to “forget it and move on”.
