The Australian government has banned the shipment of alumina and aluminium ores to Russia in an effort to increase the economic consequences for the Kremlin as a result of its decision to invade Ukraine.
The measure is intended to limit Russia’s capacity to produce aluminium, which it then sells to customers in a variety of sectors. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the embargo demonstrates Australia’s “unwavering determination to holding the Putin administration accountable”.
