According to authorities, an armed attack at a prison in Juarez, a border town in northern Mexico, on Sunday claimed the lives of at least ten guards and four prisoners. The ensuing turmoil led to the escape of approximately 24 prisoners, while 13 more were hurt. Armed attacks elsewhere in the city resulted in at least two more fatalities.

However, it is not immediately apparent who carried out the attack. According to accounts, the alleged jailbreak was started when gunmen in armored trucks opened fire and attacked a state prison in Ciudad Juarez.

According to the El Paso Times, which cited officials, the initial investigation revealed that the assailants arrived at the Cereso No. 3 state jail around 7:00 am (local time) and immediately started shooting. The state prosecutor’s office reported that the state police regained control late on Sunday and that an investigation into the fatal attack is underway.

Later that day, two drivers were slain in another armed attack in Juarez, located over the border from El Paso, Texas in the United States. In a separate incident, “Minutes before what happened, it was reported in the Avenida Manuel Gomez Morin, an armed attack against elements of the Municipal Police, in which, after a chase, four men were captured and a Ford Expedition truck was seized”, said the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office.

It is not yet clear if these three incidents were linked. After several months, the authorities sent hundreds of Mexican soldiers to Juarez following a brawl between members of two opposing cartels that broke out in the same prison. At least 11 individuals, primarily civilians, were shot and killed during the rioting, along with two inmates.
