The runway at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) will be closed for nine hours every day from January 17 to May 31 for ‘recarpeting work.’
Airport officials petitioned the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DCGA) in September 2021, requesting that the runway be closed for at least 9 hours daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. beginning in January 2022.
The runway is being re-carpeted.
According to a story in The Indian Express, the scheduled recarpeting work would be completed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily over the four-and-a-half-month period, save on public holidays and Sundays.
The construction was planned to start in November 2021; however, it was postponed owing to the holiday season.
According to a statement provided by the airport’s spokeswoman on Monday, “The scheduled runway re-carpeting work at SVPI Airport will take place from January 17, 2022 until May 31, 2022. The project will involve runway overlaying, runway strip grading and slope assessment, runway end safety area grading and slope assessment, storm water drain construction, and signpost reinstallation in the manoeuvring area. Runway maintenance closures are required operations in accordance with international safety standards in order to assure aircraft safety and extend runway life.”
