After accusing Greece of deploying US armored vehicles on two Aegean islands near the Turkish shore, Ankara summoned the Greek ambassador and complained to Washington. On Monday, Greece called the action “totally unjustified” and accused Ankara of being confrontational.
Greece and Turkey, both members of the NATO defense alliance led by the United States, have been at odds for years over maritime borders and oil exploration rights in the Aegean and east Mediterranean waters. The current flare-up began over the weekend when Turkish security sources allegedly released overhead photographs of ships filled with US armored vehicles arriving at two Greek islands, Lesbos and Samos.
