The Uttar Pradesh government renamed a Sainik School in Mainpuri district after General Bipin Rawat, the country’s first chief of defence staff (CDS), who died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in December.
“As a tribute to General Bipin Rawat, who sacrificed his life in the service of the nation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided that Sainik School, Mainpuri, will be, henceforth, known as General Bipin Rawat Sainik School,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.
The Mainpuri-based Sainik School, which opened on April 1, 2019, is one of 33 such educational establishments in the country, including three in Uttar Pradesh.
Jhansi and Amethi have the other two schools in the state.
It also operates a Sainik School in Lucknow. While the others are managed by the Ministry of Defense’s Sainik Schools Society, the one in Lucknow is run by the UP Sainik Schools Society.
General Rawat, the country’s current CDS, was one among 13 passengers killed after their helicopter crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on December 8, last year. Rawat’s wife, Madhulika Rawat, was also among the fatalities.
Group Captain Varun Singh of the Indian Air Force (IAF) originally survived the accident, but died on December 15 while receiving treatment in a hospital in Bengaluru.
