Aircraft Crash

According to #Tanzania’s prime minister, a #jet carrying 19 people crashed into #Lake Victoria on Sunday morning as it neared an airport. A senior police officer claimed that when the plane crashed into the ocean, it was raining.

From the three fatalities that had previously been reported, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa increased the death toll. 26 of the 43 passengers on the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam were rescued and transported to a hospital, local authorities reported earlier on Sunday. It was unclear if those who passed away at the hospital were included in the revised death toll.

The plane, which was en route to Bukoba Airport, was captured on camera looking mostly buried in the lake. Tanzanian airlines operate under the name Precision Air.

“We have managed to save quite a number of people,” Kagera province police commander William Mwampaghale told journalists. “When the aircraft was about 100 meters (328 feet) midair, it encountered problems and bad weather. It was raining and the plane plunged into the water,” he said. Mwampaghale said that rescue operations were still underway.
