According to shipping records, a luxury yacht owned by the sanctioned Russian businessman Alexey Mordashov that is valued over half a billion dollars has arrived in Hong Kong waters following a week-long journey from Russia.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions on a number of Russian oligarchs because of their ties to President Vladimir Putin. Mordashov was one of these individuals. The yacht Nord landed in Hong Kong on October 5 after a seven-day journey from Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, through the Sea of Japan, and the East China Sea, according to the vessel tracking website Marine Tracker. When asked if it was aware of the restrictions put on the vessel’s owner, the maritime department of the Hong Kong government did not react right away. A Russian flag was flying at the stern of the multi-deck boat, which was spotted docked on Friday in waters west of Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Harbour. The vessel has six decks and a helipad.
The 465 foot (141 metre) Nord, one of the most opulent luxury yachts in the world with a value of $521 million, was built by a German shipyard last year. The 65-meter (215-foot) “Lady M,” a second luxury yacht owned by Mordashov, was impounded by Italian authorities at the port of Imperia in March.
