According to a Reuters article, the United States set a new global record for daily COVID-19 cases on Monday, with at least 1.3 million infections reported, despite the development of the extremely contagious Omicron form.According to research from Johns Hopkins University, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 60 million on Sunday, with at least 837,594 fatalities since January 2020.According to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services, 142,388 individuals were admitted to hospitals across the country on Sunday, exceeding the previous high of 142,315 reported on January 14 of last year, according to The New York Times. The daily average of hospitalisations was 132,086, up 83 percent from the previous week.
Deaths are averaging over 1,700 per day, up from around 1,400 in recent days but still much below levels observed earlier this winter.
Hospitals have been swamped by the Omicron wave, which has drained personnel who were already exhausted from the Delta variety.
